What is your ‘why’ for exercising?
Having struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my adult life, when I started swimming regularly about 7-8 years ago, I found that not only did my physical health improve, but also my mental health.
I often find that I need time alone to reset and refocus myself, and this is what swimming does for me.
The methodical rotation of the arms and the calm water help me to zone out and puts me in a mediative state.
Although I do swim in the pool regularly, I love getting outdoors to swim. The sense of adventure going somewhere new along with the health benefits that the cold water has brings a sense of wellbeing and reward when you finish a swim.
What advice would you give to someone around using physical activity to improve their mental health?
Find something you enjoy and do it. Even on those days that you may not feel up to it, I can guarantee that once you have been out and had that time to yourself, it will make a difference.
I try to find at least an hour in my day to do something that gets me out, if I can’t swim then even just a walk outside can make all the difference.
Most of all, just enjoy what you do and don’t put yourself under too much pressure.
